Evaluation Details
I am happy to serve as your evaluator. Before you schedule, please read through this to make sure expectations are clear and to see if I am a good fit for your family.
First, everything about an evaluation is based on the state requirements. Here is the text of a relevant section of the PA homeschool law:
In order to demonstrate that appropriate education is occurring, the supervisor of the home education program shall provide and maintain on file the following documentation for each student enrolled in the home education program:
(1) A portfolio of records and materials. The portfolio shall consist of a log, made contemporaneously with the instruction, which designates by title the reading materials used, samples of any writings, worksheets, workbooks or creative materials used or developed by the student and in grades three, five and eight results of nationally normed standardized achievement tests in reading/language arts and mathematics or the results of Statewide tests administered in these grade levels.
The evaluation shall ... be based on an interview of the child and a review of the portfolio required in clause (1) and shall certify whether or not an appropriate education is occurring.
Evaluations take place in May or June and are conducted via a 30 minute virtual zoom meeting. I ask for a portfolio to be submitted at least two days before our appointment. This could be an e-portfolio (via google drive, another shared site, a website you create, a pdf file, etc) or you can drop off a paper portfolio at my home in Downingtown. The length of our meeting is shorter than an in-person evaluation since I can review the portfolio and prepare the report outside the interview. The zoom meeting is to comply with the homeschool law which requires the evaluator to interview the student.
Your year-end evaluation is not a test! It is an opportunity to share all you have done during the school year and fulfill the legal requirements of the state. I try to make it a relaxed and enjoyable experience for both the parent and the student.
After the interview, I create a report for each student. You will submit this to your school district superintendent by June 30. This can serve as a "report card" in the event that one is needed for sports, camps, scholarship, etc.
My rates are:
$30 for kindergarten
$55 for grades 1-6
$80 for grades 7-12
To prepare for your evaluation with me, please compile the following into a portfolio:
Standardized testing results (required for 3rd, 5th, and 8th grades.) Find a list of approved tests here.
Samples of work for each subject covered (samples from beginning, middle, and end of the year help show progress)
Book and/or curriculum list for each subject covered, plus book log of books read independently by student
Optional: anything else that would help me understand what you have accomplished this school year, such as a field trip list, workbooks, textbooks, projects, photos, video clips, etc.
If you are not sure what subjects are required by PA law for your child's grade level, please read the law at the website of the PA Department of Education.
I hope this answers your questions. Feel free to reach out if you need anything else! Scheduling for year-end evaluations opens in February.
